MONTJUIC
Its location, near the port and dominating the city was ideal
as a defensive site.
At the present time, this is a large area with gardens, museums
and sport facilities.
The International Expo of 1929 initiated the urbanization of
the mountain with avenues, green areas and museums.
The 92 Olympics consolidated the Anella Olímpica for sports and
major public events.

At the top we find the Castle of Montjuïc, built in the XVII
century, which accommodates the Military Museum. Opened in 1963 it
has an interesting collection of armours and uniforms.
The
view overlooking Barcelona from the fortress is excellent.
The Miró Foundation, a building of great interest and one of
the most visited museums, offers an exceptional collection of
art.
In close proximity we find the Anella Olímpica, with the most
important sport structures of the 1992 events, such as the Estadi
Olímpic built in 1929 and whose interior was totally renovated for
the Olympiads, allowing larger capacity for spectators and
mantaining the original and interesting neoclassical facade.
In the opposed side of the monumental square, the Palau
Sant
Jordi is situated. Designed by Arata Isozaki, it is a masterpiece
of modern design and contemporary engineering, ideal for indoor
sports, concerts and other events.
All this area offers an idea of how important the Olympics were
for Barcelona.
Further down we find the Poble Espanyol, built in 1929 to show
visitors the different architectural styles of Spain. In this area
you can enjoy walking through a typical street of Andalucía,
appreciate Castillan architecture or discover what Catalunya and
other Spanish regions can offer.
The impressive Palau Nacional, built for 1929 Exhibition of, is
the home of the MNAC Museu National d´Art de Catalunya, offering
an extraordinary collection of Romanesque and Gothic art.
Just
below is located the Magic Fountain, a beautiful combination of
water, music, light and colours. This fountain, designed by Carles
Buhigas was built for the International Exhibition and offers a
fascinating show of light and water which captivates.
The Plaça Espanya square, with its beautiful fountain, the old
Bull Ring and its two Venetian towers is the entrance to the
spectacular Avenue of Mª Cristina, where the Trade Fair is located.
When the laterals of this avenue, the Palau Nacional and the
Magic fountain are illuminated, it becomes an unforgettable
experience.

THE OLYMPIC PORT AND THE BEACHES
One of the areas recently rediscovered by the people of
Barcelona is the Olympic village, Diagonal Mar, the Forum area and
the four kilometres of beaches totally conditioned and with
complete services.
One of the most important changes of the 92 Olympics was the
reorganisation plan undertaken in the neighbourhood of Poble Nou,
eliminating small industries, garages and industrial warehouses to
create the current Olympic Vilage, where the athletes stayed
during the Olympic Games and is now transformed into residential
district. The beaches are perfectly conditioned with excellent
services which invite us to walk and enjoy ourselves, are very
fashionable during weekends.

The Port Olímpic combines a sports marina with an outdoor area
of restaurants and night leisure facilities, becoming very popular
during the summer nights.
EL PARQUE DE LA CIUTADELLA

This extensive green area was created in 1714 as a military
citadel and was offered to the city in 1869 and converted into a
public park.
This area became the centre of the Universal Exhibition of
1888. At present it accommodates the Parliament of Catalonia, the
Zoo, several museums, green areas, a pond with boats and a
beautiful fountain with a cascade of statues and figures in which
Gaudí worked.
In
the North entrance, the giant Victory Arch build for the
Exhibition is situated.
